Rebecca Wartell Rebecca Wartell, Instructor in Jewish Studies, recently published an article in the Mediterranean Historical Review titled "Rabbis on refugees: theological responses to the treatment of converso migrants in the sixteenth-century Candia." The article explores the treatment of converso refugees arriving in Crete in the mid-sixteenth century. Rabbinic authorities throughout the Mediterranean were outraged when local Jewish communities ostracized the conversos, whose ancestors had been forcibly converted to Christianity during the Spanish Inquisition and were subsequently seeking refuge and a return to Judaism.
